Fuquay-Varina History

Fuquay-Varina, North CarolinaFuquay-Varina came to be in the 1960’s when two towns merged, bringing a mixture of interesting historical structures, including several tobacco warehouses, and magestic Victorian, Craftsman and Colonial Revival homes. Attracting major corporations and manufacturers with its convenient location and quiet charm, Fuquay-Varina is home to John Deere and Tyco/Raycheme.

There’s been a steady stream of development going on in the area including numerous residential and commercial sites throughout the town.  One nice thing you’ll find about this quaint town is that many of the older structures from its past remain within the town limits.  One such area is The Springs; it was back in 1858 that ‘the springs’ were uncovered and are now contained in a small park developed on the site in 1945 which was handed over to the town in 1998 to maintain as a historic park.

Community leaders are focused on maximizing improvements in Fuquay in the areas of economic development, education, traffic control, public safety, infrastructure, planning, and parks and recreation.

How did Fuquay-Varina get it’s funny name?  We get asked that all the time!!  Actually it was fates of history; the town started out as Piney Woods.  Sure the Burts, Joneses, and the Rowlands were all land owners in the early 1800′s but the town got it’s name from a French veteran of the Revolutionary War named William Fuquay who moved his family here after buying 1000 acres of Jones Land in 1805.

That explains the Fuquay but where did the Varina come from?  Just south of the Spring a young soldier during war had a pen pal named ‘Varina’.  Story has it that she would regularly send him ‘morale boosting letters’.  Later he married her and brought her to live at his homeplace.  He named his post office and business across from the Spring after her.

In the early 1900′s tobacco farmers started migrating into Southern Wake county from Granville and the ‘golden weed’ tobacco market was harvested. The rest as they say is history… The two towns joined as one neighboring community in 1964 and became Fuquay-Varina.

Did you know that Fuquay-Varina is know as the “fall line”?  I learned recently this is because it marks the elevation inland at which waterfalls begin to appear in creeks and rivers.
