Umstead State Park: A Favorite Raleigh Getaway

Hiking in Raleigh: Umstead State Park

Ahhh William B. Umstead State Park.  These last few weeks, like much of the nation, we’ve experienced roller coaster weather.  A few days ago it was a beautiful 72° without a cloud in the sky and today it’s a brisk 35°.  The optimism in me hopes we’ll be enjoying the sunny warm days again soon.

William B Umstead State Park Info

Taking advantage of warm days in the winter can be rejuvenating.  If you’re looking for a great place to find that rejuvenation, Umstead State Park would be on my list of places in Raleigh to recommend.

What is There to Do at William B. Umstead State Park?Raleigh State Park: Picnic Area at Umstead State Park

To me, what makes Umstead so unique is the feeling of remoteness and tranquility.  It doesn’t feel like you’re in the Capital city of Raleigh, NC when you’re enjoying what Umstead State Park has to offer.  Recreational activities include hiking, camping, boating, horseback riding, cycling, fishing and of course picnicking.

Where is Umstead State Park?

There are a couple different entrances to Umstead.  The main entrance is off of Glenwood Avenue as shown on the map below at 8801 Glenwood Ave, Raleigh, NC 27612.

The other is my preferred entrance and is located in Cary – head North on N. Harrison Avenue toward I-40, cross over the interstate and you’ll dead end into Umstead.

It’s possible there are additional entrances I haven’t found yet as Umstead has over 5,400 acres of woodland tucked perfectly between Raleigh, Cary, Durham and Research Triangle Park.  Enjoying the acres of Umstead is a great way to spend an afternoon (or weekend!).

We hope to see you out and about in Wake County!
