The 1.03 mile trail is constructed of recycled asphalt, and even the storm water pipes are made from recycled Town of Cary Swift Creek Greenwayplastic bags.  The multi-purpose polyethylene plastic, (HDPE = High Density Polyethylene) is commonly found in items such as grocery bags, detergent bottles and milk jugs.
So now whenever you use these items, think about all the great new products that can be made from them when you finished…  and PLEASE join us and choose to RECYCLE!

Loved this sign…Town of Cary Swift Creek Greenway

We’re also pretty excited to learn that a portion of the trail is under construction with plans of expansion!

Labor Day Week-end 2011 in Raleigh NC: Summer begins to roll into Autumn here in Wake County

Labor Day Week-end in Raleigh and around Raleigh NC

Fall in Raleigh NC

Ahhhh…. Labor Day

In Wake County, Summer Begins to Roll into Autumn

No it doesn’t quite look like this around here yet, but this week-end we know it’s close.

Labor Day week-end for us is one of relaxation and reflection ~ A couple days to enjoy family and friends and of course the ‘weber’!

It’s been a HOT summer for us here in the Triangle, so the welcoming cool breezes in the morning that are starting to roll in are a welcome relief.

While Fall 2011 doesn’t actually start until September 23rd, the Tuesday after the long weekend of Labor Day always feels like a new season.  Most all the kid’s are back in Wake County Schools and things just seem a tad more laid back.Labor Day Weekend in Wake County NC

For most locations in and around Wake County, North Carolina the public and community swimming pools are closing this week-end too.  But here’s a tip: peak season rates for tourism in NC start to roll into Fall season rates

Around our house there’s something else happening; we’re gearing up for football season.

I personally like to take this time to organize my thoughts of the upcoming holidays and how the final quarter will wind down in the Raleigh Real Estate Market.

Truth be told; I LOVE Labor Day weekend because I LOVE Autumn!  It’s my favorite season of the year!

If you’ll be in or around Wake County NC for Labor Day Weekend you have dozens of great entertainment options ranging from the Raleigh Pub Crawl & Haunted Adventure Tour, the Carolina Exotic Pet Show & Sale, or choose among the exciting sporting events, theatres, ballets, museums and shopping Wake County has to offer.

Whatever your plans we wish for you a happy, safe, spectacular weekend!  Do you have big plans for the Labor Day Weekend?

We hope to see you out and about in Wake County NC!

Take Advantage of The Calm Before the Storm

Take Advantage of The last few minutes of Calm Before the Storm

Don’t let Hurricane Irene Catch You Off Guard

With Hurricane Irene headed toward North Carolina’s Coast we don’t want to be caught flat footed should the worse case scenario become a reality.  There’s still time to get prepared!

The headlines all up and down the East Coast are pretty consistent surrounding Hurricane Irene:

  • Surges expected 6 to 11 feet above ground level in North Carolina, enough to cause significant damage to beaches and structures
  • A foot of rain or more expected in already flood susceptible Virginia Beach
  • Title and storm surge concerns extended to Cape Cod Massachusetts
  • Rough seas sent 8 people to the hospital near West Palm Beach
  • Atlantic City casinos to close
  • Right now over 9 million people are under a Hurricane Warning
  • 65 million people are within the path of Hurricane Irene
  • Hurricane Irene around 400 MILES wide
  • New York to potentially have mandatory evacuations and mass transit shut down
  • More than 1,000 airline flights cancelled
  • Areas could see double digit numbers when it comes to rainfall

Right now is really the few hours of Calm Before the Storm This is what the sky in Raleigh, NC looked like earlier today.  But as of 5 PM we are starting to see thunder/lightning and heavy rain already.

Raleigh, NC sky before Hurricane Irene

North Carolina has been hit HARD by Hurricane’s in the past.  While the Triangle area right now isn’t slated to be hit by much more than bands of wind and rain, it never hurts to be prepared.  Take advantage of this calm and get prepared.  We wanted to share some things we’ve learned from hurricanes that have hit the Raleigh, NC area in the past.

We’ve stocked our house with the following items, and would suggest everyone be prepared with:

  • Battery powered radio
  • Cash (if the power goes out, ATM’s, debit & credit card readers could be out)
  • Full tank of gas
  • Water
  • Food that doesn’t need to be kept cool
  • Flashlights with batteries
  • Keep your medications with you

I visited WRAL.com and got the storm tracker for my Droid and iPad.  Should we loose power it’s nice to have some contact with the outside world

Evacuations are being seen in States ranging from North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Massachusetts.

It really speaks to the magnitude of the event when you think about the number of states involved that cover such a massive area of the Eastern United States.  Governor’s and local officials caution residents and visitors in the areas, and even President Obama suggests “Hurricane Irene could be a historical storm”.

As Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York stated: Nature is a force more powerful than any of us and it really is better to be safe than sorry.

Please use your head ~ better to be over prepared and have to pack your kits up for another time than caught without what you need!!

Not everything despairs when the temperature rises! Crepe Myrtles in the Triangle

Not everything despairs when the temperature rises! Crepe Myrtles love the heat..

Crepe Myrtles in the Triangle!

Crepe Myrtles

I tease newcomers saying that if they don’t like the weather here in Raleigh NC, wait a minute…

In the heat of the summer we all find ourselves dragging around a bit when temperatures rise; but then we’ll get a torrential downpour that’s referred to as  a ‘frog strangler’ around here and ‘bam’ the temperature drops!

But, not everything is complaining about the heat.  Anyone out and about looking at buying a home in Raleigh can’t help but notice one thing….
crepe myrtles
Our Crepe Myrtles!  I’ve never seen anything like this ~ the hotter it gets the more beautiful these trees and bushes become.  Turns out they LOVE extended summer heat!

One of the fastest growing crepe myrtles, and one of the few with red blooms is the Red Rocket Crepe Myrtle… then there’s the Dynamite Red & Arapaho Crepe…

Crepe Myrtles

We have the Natchez Crepe around our home – huge white cotton looking blooms!

Ones that remind me of living up north with their lavender blooms that look a tad like lilac trees is the Muskogee Crepe.  I just wish they had the lilac scent to accompany them.

So while you’re out and about in this heat, perhaps looking at homes in our area, be sure to take a minute and enjoy the beauty of our wonderful Crepe Myrtles!

Whether you prefer to spell them Crape Myrtles or Crepe Myrtles – just take time to enjoy them.  It sure helps to take ones mind off the heat!

Why WE chose Real Estate -> a dream job in the making… it was just meant to be.

Back in the 70’s while in college I headed up to Maine as I was invited to spend the summer with friends.  But since I was funding my college tuition of course I had to find a job.

I did, at the Lewiston-Auburn credit bureau.  As a bill collector. Hmmm – not a glamorous Pamela St. Peterhigh profile type of job, but it was full time work and with it came a real life changing experience.    I met Phillip Lovelett.

Mr. Lovelett had had throat cancer and lost his larynx.  He used a device he held up to his throat to talk through.  It was very mechanical sounding.  Some people had a hard time listening to it but for some reason it didn’t bother me…  I found him brilliant!  A truer entrepreneur I’d  never met.  He made more sense to me than all my business administration professors did all the previous years in college  I later learned that he had had many business adventures – some successful, some not so much…

I enjoyed being an apprentice under him that summer…  He seemed to like teaching me too, as he invited me back the following summer….  So I moved up there after I finished the following year.

So what does all of this have to do with real estate?  Well Mr. Lovelett it turns out wanted to get into real estate.  By now he realized I was hungry to learn and being more of a hands on learner he decided I needed to take a real estate course and get my licence. He wanted his wife to join me too.  So we took an excellent class and I was hooked!  That’s the career I wanted!  I was thrilled to be headed for my exam the beginning of the following year.  I had never felt more excited about anything!

But as life has other plans for us sometimes, as we all know, my Mom was diagnosed with Parkinson disease.  So unfortunately I had to head back to Pittsburgh to help support my family…  I can’t tell you how disappointed I was.  I was just a month away from taking the exam.

Lee & Pamela St. Peter

Just before leaving Maine to head back to Pittsburgh I met Lee.  Well long story short we had a very short engagement and were married just 6 months later.  The first years flew by – our family grew and then we had an opportunity to move to Montreal…

I had never forgotten my dream of becoming a real estate professional.  So once the kids were old enough to start school I started looking into it again.  However now living in Quebec, I learned I would have had to take the course and exam in FRENCH…  That wasn’t going to happen in my life time…

We stayed in Canada for 16 years – then it was time to head back to the states.  But we didn’t know where we wanted to go.  Lee said ‘you’ve always been talking about Raleigh NC so let’s go check it out.’  We did ~ we loved it ~ and the rest as they say is history.

Well once here I started a new job with a software company and it was Lee that found it difficult finding a new job.  So guess what he did?  YEP – HE got his license and started in real estate before me.  I just shook my head saying ‘Lord you had the wrong name on that prayer’.

But again, as the good Lord always does, he knew what was best…  After Lee got established it was just a few short years later that I was able to join him and we became a team with Prudential Carolinas Realty.  That was over a decade ago.

I honestly can’t think of another profession that I could have enjoyed more.   Home has always been where the heart is for me.  My whole life.  And being the homebody that I am I still today get so excited when I’m able to help someone find ‘there happy place’!

Life is good isn’t it when you’re in your dream job…

Simple Energy Tips to Save Money at Home

Smart Tips to Live a Greener Cleaner Life AND Save Money at Home

You may have heard recently in the news about the possibility of the House of Representatives repealing light bulb efficiency standards (the BULB Act).  The premise of this Act is to require that incandescent light bulbs be 30% more efficient by 2012.  One of the things I learned from this (I think is fascinating) is that the cheap incandescent bulbs we see in stores (10 for $1 anyone?) haven’t changed since they were created over 100 years ago!  Why fix it if it ain’t broke?   Lots of reasons!!

This Act will:

  • save the average family $100 annually
  • cut US energy costs by more than $10 billion annually
  • cut the nation’s total electricity consumption by the equivalent of what the state of Indiana uses, according to The Alliance to Save Energy
  • cut global warming pollution by the equivalent of 14 million cars on the road annually (or 70 million tons of CO2)

This is significant! FORTUNATELY the House voted against pulling the plug on the bill so that we can all enjoy more efficient light bulbs (as the standard).  Very proud to live in a nation that strives for more efficiency – both for the environment and our pockets (on some things at least)!!

Unfortunately we can’t rely on product standards for everything, but there are lots of great ways to cut our energy consumption and keep more money in our pockets!

Included are just a few:Saving Money at Home

  • CFL light bulbs – initial cost is a bit more but with big annual savings the payback time is only a couple months.  Just remember with CFL’s disposal is a tad trickier, since they contain Mercury they can not be disposed of in your household trash or recycling container.  Home Depot, Best Buy and Radio Shack offer free drop-off locations for unbroken bulbs.  If one does break, be sure you know how to safely clean up your CFL.

  • Weatherstripping and Caulking – for a low initial cost you can save big bucks by not letting the cool or warm air you pay for escape through cracks or under doors, the more allowed to escape, the harder your heating and cooling source has to work to keep the desired temperature.

Energy Star Appliances - Saving Money at Home

  • Energy Star appliances – especially if you’re already in the market for new appliances… Energy Star rated appliances often cost the same as standard appliances and can save big bucks (starting immediately and over the life of the appliance) in energy savings (your utility bills).

  • Programmable Thermostat – For every degree over 72 you set your air conditioning during the warm months you’ll save 3-5% on your energy bill.  Even if the temperature is only adjusted higher when you’re not home… the savings will add up.  For even more savings, close your blinds and draw your shades when you’re not home during the day to reduce solar gain.
